Nage Hanigalu Comedy Night
Date: May 29, 2009
Venue: Wheat Ridge Recreation Center
The Program
Ganesha Vandane: It was
beautifully rendered by Kamala Vedanthan.
Introduction:
Ramesh Dhuler gave a brief but apt introduction in “Spashta”
Kannada.
Performances:
Richard Louis: He was the first to perform and right
away he had the audiences in splits when he referred to Denver as ‘Kalasipalya’.
His style of comedy revolved a lot around marital relationships and
family life. The people really related to that! His explanation for
why Lord Ganesha never got married…”Ee LapTop savasane beda antha
mouse eetkondbuta” was probably his best joke! His chewing gum
analogy to marriage and the land phone-mobile phone analogy for wife
v/s girlfriend jokes were outstanding. He made fun of the next
performer (Beechi Pranesh)’s skinny build in a very amusing manner.
Beechi Pranesh: Drawing
his inspiration from well-liked old Kannada literature by
Beechi (Rayasam Bheemasena Rao) and others, he made the audience
weak with laughter by his one-liners. He got back at Richard Louis
with his own set of personal jokes about him and the advantages of
being tall and skinny. The so-called talking weight machine
experience in Singapore gave rise to much applause and laughter. He
gave many funny examples of how the same sentence could be
interpreted in different ways just based on the tone of voice,
emphasis on words and by splitting it into phrases. His monologue on
the inappropriate names of various stores was hilarious. So was his
recounting of his experiences in a village near Gulbarga. His way
with words really proved the saying he quoted “Mathembudu
Jyothirlinga”.
Mimicry Dayanand: Taking the stage in the end, he had
to match the fantastic
performances of his two colleagues. He kept the laugh-fest going
with his own set of jokes. His annoyance with people asking obvious
questions connected with the audience. People were choked with
laughter at his mimicry of how various other language-speakers talk
and also how people speak exactly like the food they eat. He also
gave us a good explanation of why potholes exist on Indian roads.
True to his given name, Mimicry Dayanand was spot on with his
imitation of Kannada movie stars, Dr. Raj, Prabhakar,
Dr.Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, Srinath, Shankar Nag among others. His
impersonation of their body language was exactly right too!
Appreciation:
Dr. Prabhakara Rao spoke a few words and presented the artists with
gifts to show our appreciation.
Vote of Thanks:
Raj Bistaiah gave a well-written vote of thanks in “Spashta” Kannada
too.

The organizers had done an excellent job
with the setup, food and chaos-free atmosphere. Five weeks of
vigorous planning by the organizing team made it go off without a
hitch. The organizers had a very busy couple of days, right from
picking the artists up from the airport on Thursday, to taking them
for a sight-seeing tour of the Rockies, to providing them with
boarding and lodging during their stay in Denver and to dropping
them off at the airport, in time for their 12.30am flight Friday
night. Kudos to their organizational skills and hosting abilities!
Ambience of the night
Laughter was the mood of the evening. People turned up in large
numbers to laugh and be entertained by the hilarious trio of Richard
Louis, Beechi Pranesh and Mimicry Dayanand. Most people were at the
venue by 7pm, so quite prompt - not IST but MST! There was half an
hour of mingling and snacks before the show started at around
7.30pm. The auditorium was packed with around 200 people who really
seemed to be having a great time throughout the show! Snacks
consisting of samosas and veggie-rolls, provided by Bombay Palace
restaurant, were available throughout the show for anyone who didn’t
want to fill up their stomach with just laughter! There was a
separate section set up for kids. A lot of the volunteers took turns
monitoring the kids so they missed out on a bit of the fun but they
had the thanks of the gathered assembly for allowing 3 hours of
uninterrupted fun. The kids too liked their 3 hours of uninterrupted
fun, coloring and watching TV among other things! So, there were no
complaints from any side.
